TRAINING ON THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (Part 2)There is quite a bit of teaching on 1 Corinthians 1
There is quite a bit of teaching on 1 Corinthians 12 but not not as much on 1 Corinthians 14. One is more elementary and the other a little more in depth. Many will skim over 1 Corinthians 12. Then talk about love in 1 Corinthians 13, and exclude or at least minimize, 1 Corthinans 14.
Some will take a verse like 1 Corinthians 14:19, " ...Yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue..." and completely dismiss vs. 18 and the rest of that chapter to minimize the importance of tongues and interpretation.
1 Corinthians 14 is primarily talking about the public use of tongues, not so much the private.
PROPHECY VS. TONGUES & INTERPRETATION
1 Corinthians 14:1 tells us to especially desire to prophesy, but the context is vs. 1-5. If you don't read this chapter in context you will be hopelessly confused. "Except he interpret" is the key to the first few verses of this chapter. That theme runs through the the first 25 verses of this entire chapter. At times prophecy is preferable to tongues and interpretation. At other times, not so.
Prophecy is preferable when a minister is operating by himself, but not so when there is team ministry. For example, when my wife and I travel we minister more in tongues and interpretation, and unlike other couples who move in these twin gifts, we can both interpret (there is a video example below).
God does not want mediocrity in the use of these gifts, but excellence. You can't have that with novices. There is a place for training, but public demonstration should primarily come through seasoned vessels. This is what we do in our Holy Ghost Forums.
